Nylons are generally very tough materials with good thermal and chemical resistance.
The term Nylon refers to a group of plastics known as polyamides. This comprises of a wide range of materials type such as nylon 6; nylon 6,6; nylon 6,12; nylon 12 etc. Due to the wide range of materials in this group, there is an extremely broad range of properties available.
Here are PSD we use mainly Nylon 6, either unfilled or glass filled up to 50%. The glass filled nylons have an increased mechanical strength, high rigidity and degree of hardness as well as dimensional stability.
Nylons tend to absorb moisture from their environment.
This absorption will continue until it reaches equilibrium.
The general rule is that the impact resistance and flexibility tends to increase with moisture content.
Temperature and part thickness can have an effect on the extent of moisture absorption.
Nylons have many different applications, but within the injection moulding world, they are generally used as metal replacement materials such as for car engine components.
